There is something very appealing to me about collage ….
I think is speaks to the “maker” in me, and I am always happiest when I’m making!
I’ve been making daily collages over the last few weeks since I heard artist Jane Davies talking about her idea of ‘constant collage’.
You start with a small collection of diverse collage materials without any plan in mind. The idea is to work quickly and without pausing to plan, using just what you have at hand …. adding one piece a then the next until you have covered 80% of the substrate. A little like intuitive painting!
This is good fun and has the potential to throw up interesting combinations of colours, shapes and materials.
The hard bit is not letting the thinking/planning brain take over ….. a time limit and a restricted selection of collage materials helps!
The results can be a little surprising and provide a useful resource that can help move larger work forward.
Now back to the sketchbook ….
