Mapping colours .....

This neat graphic popped up in my Facebook feed just after New Year … such a creative take on the possibilities of the New Year !

Then I had the idea that this would be a great way to map my personal use of colour over 12 months!

Colour is one of those areas that I keep coming back to …. reading about colour palettes, learning about mixing colours and exploring combinations, spending time painting colour swatches and colour charts … so much to learn! I enjoy using a limited colour palette when I paint and find that it produces a pleasing result but my choice of colours is largely intuitive! I have read posts by artists talking about their personal colour palette and others who recommend a colour palette for landscapes or portraits.

But the question that remains unanswered is …. ‘what is my personal colour palette’ and how do I find or define it? Now I have a way of mapping and observing the colours I choose intuitively!

The plan is to add the colours I am using in the studio, or other colours that draw my attention from day to day ie the way I feel, the morning sky …. allowing my intuition to make the choice, and recording it on a large chart to see what emerges at the end of the year!

I’ve drawn up a chart, opting for rectangular shapes. I thought circles might test my patience a bit!

and made a start …..

I love the possibilities that this little project offers. I came across this quote from English writer, J B Priestly which I think sums it up …

“ I have always been delighted at the prospect of a new day, a fresh try, one more start, with perhaps a bit of magic waiting somewhere behind the morning”

Thank you for reading and taking an interest in my art. I will report back on my colour mapping!

Wishing you a colourful 2022 full of possibilities! CC
